A last minute show cancellation had us scrambling to make new plans, learn how we pivoted and got to hit 2 Broadway shows, Rockefeller Center, and some amazing food!
Per usual, we started this morning off late and ordered in some yummy breakfast! Steel-cut oatmeal with coconut flakes, strawberries, blackberries, and brown sugar plus a cup of nice hot green tea was a great way to start the day!
Then we had something unfortunate happen. While I was getting ready to see the Moulin Rouge musical, I received a notification that it was cancelled due to Covid... major bummer... but when in NYC, there is always something else to do. Here are some great things to do if your show gets cancelled last minute:
Try and see a different Broadway show - If you find out in time, you can always snag tickets to a different musical. We got the notification 2 hours before and tickets were still available to Aladdin, Phantom of the Opera, Little Shop of Horrors, Jersey Boys, and Girl from the North Country.
Other forms of entertainment - In New York, there are tons of other shows not on Broadway that you can see like Blue Man Group or a comedy show.
Art exhibits - New York has some of the best museum collections ever, spend a day at MOMA or another art attraction.
Go shopping - Retail therapy! Shopping always makes me feel better and there is plenty of it in NYC!
We ended up seeing Little Shop of Horrors off-Broadway at the Westside Theater and it was tons of fun! As a dedicated plant mom this was the perfect show for me! The dark comedy is a hilarious tale of love and murder.
After the show it was time for some lunch at the iconic Sardi's restaurant. The interior is covered in caricatures of famous people and the food was exceptional! I ordered a combo of the Sardi's Traditional Cannelloni au Gratin and the spinach version. The first was beef, pork, veal, mushrooms, and supreme sauce stuffed into a french crepe, and the other was filled with spinach and ricotta cheese. I totally recommend doing the combo because the lightness of the spinach balances well with the heavier meat.
We returned to our hotel for a quick outfit change before going out see the light display at Saks 5th Avenue. The light display is super cute and plays about every 10 minutes. It is right across from Rockefeller Center so we stopped by to see the tree and skating.
Pro Tip: Take pictures at Rockefeller when the Saks light show is going on. Everyone is crowding towards the lights and facing that way, so it is the perfect time to grab a few photos!
After we soaked in the lights, it was time to see our final Broadway show of the trip: Hadestown. The show was visually stunning. The costuming, choreography, and set design created an incredible visual experience to complement the music and singing. The show revolves around Greek gods and focuses on the relationships of Hades & Persephone and Orpheus & Eurydice. It is a heartbreaking story of love and trust portrayed by incredibly emotive actors.
After the show another successful day in NYC was finished. I wish you all an incredible New Years and I can't wait to share my NYE experience in Times Square!
Always,
Paris
